I have dark brown hair and it's starting to grey. I have natural red tones and a light complection. I have never dyed my hair in my life and I'm a little nervous. I would like to start with highlights. Can anyone recommend a color?

If it were my hair, and I have certainly never been afraid to experiment with my own head, I'd go with some deep red highlights and then maybe some wispy blondes. That might me cute. :) Good luck. You could always talk to a stylist and see what they recommend, just don't let them talk you into anything you don't wan't to do. I did that once and ended up looking like a little boy.

if you are doing a home dye i would say don't do your own high lights, they will come out usually far from the colour you are hoping and will be very streaky. I would invest in a trip to the hair dressers as would be much easier and have much better results, but if thats not an option i would get a semi-perminant brown hair dye, this will add lots of condition to your hair and will gradually fade to bring your natural red tones through

if you are a bit nervous, start with a dye that is natural, so it only covers the grey, not completely changes you. (this will also make it less obvious that you are dyeing it)
Accent the red tones and go with your natural brown colour if you are happy with it.

I would go pick out one color lighter than you think you want.
Highlights should pick up naturally as you already have lighter/darker hair . Greys are a bear to get rid of especially glowing platinum kinky grey . If you dont get enough red you can get color kits that streak hair .

Do-it-yourself highlights seldom look good. Go to a stylist. Ask friends with nice highlights for the name of their stylist. Let the stylist recommend several options. Get lightlights and lowlights. Start with light brown?

As I have worked in a pro beauty supply and salon for a number of years, I would recommend that for a first timer like yourself, PLEASE go to a pro and either have them recommend a color/brand and give you precise instructions, OR have them perform the coloring. You will be so much better off, trust me on this one. LOTS of ladies with little coloring experience usually come in for an EXPENSIVE color correction. In the pro supplies, there is a really great color line by Developlus called Satin. No ammonia smell and they use aloe based conditioners in the product. I swear by it. Verrrry gentle and pleasant and grey coverage is GREAT and realllllly lasts. I use the reds and in other brands, they fade faster and look dull. LOVE my satin color!!! And no, I dont work for them, just love to pass on my professional knowledge!!!

For you first time, go get them done at the salon, they are about 30$, but you can see what they are doing to your hair so you can do it yourself. Also, over the counter dyes are harder to use and harder to maintain. You could spent the same amount in OTC asyou would the salon...
If you insist on doing it yourself, look at the hilights and find the ones made for your hair color.

For highlights, go to a salon. There are too many variables and places to go wrong with them.
If you just want to blend the gray, try a demi-permanent hair color a shade or two lighter than your natural color. You can get better products at Sally Beauty (than in a drugstore). Do a strand test first, before you do the entire head. Supplies you'll need are the dye, it's developer, disposable gloves, a plastic mixing bowl, a brush, an old shirt to wear or a cape to protect your clothing. Don't get it into your eyes! Have someone do the back when it's time to retouch the roots. Don't keep dying all the hair each time, bc that makes the hair porous, dry and unhealthy looking Always condition well.
